thank you britt for surfing the internet for me. now i can just check in on your page without all that hassle of searching.
on another note you guys should come visit…perhaps this weekend
I soo want that floatable body thing. to inflate in a small room- party. hehe. In addition: cool pasta! yeah, something orange would be good in there and chilli peppers! ((aside: I have to question a rational who uses emoti-cons; but then E’s come in all types don’t they)) what is the rational’s reason for emoticon justificiation? heh heh
remember rationals often have trouble expressing feelings due to their thinking nature…what better way than to let a fancy computer script do it for you in a completely mundane keyboard kind of way.
as an added bonus the strategy behind it often results in making others feel at ease…plus…overanalyzing isn’t all that efficient and my N only can keep me interested for so long…hah hah (in a non-emoticon way - dont want to get anybody feeling to much)
Fight it out, guys!
may I inquire: prior to the use of emoticons (not that there is anything wrong with them), did you consider the pros/cons of their use? And one more thing (just to challenge you, Dan): I have not known many T’s who were concerned about making people feel at ease. let us debate this a little, what do you say?
haha serena, i think you may have to much of an internal conception of what each type can and cannot be.
no matter what your letters are; we all have various reasons to make people feel at ease. some because they truly care and others because it accomplishes something with a greater aim behind it. (eg: in this case making others feel at ease lessens the extent to which they are effected by my directness) making people comfortable is an important strategic, diplomatic, logistics, and tactical move depending on the situation and the person behind it.
what i “think” is that it could just be possible in your idealist viewpoint that you have decided to have a very cut and dry idea of what people are. i agree i am highly drawn to the simplicity and reliability of summarizing someone in four letters. then again the test only structures the initial way that each type will react and interact. with that in mind i figure that whether in a business sale or personal conversation i am immediately the minority with how i think. get one of each type and your view of what is right now makes up only 25% in the room. i guess what i am saying is that sometimes it lends itself well to do a bit of everything, depending on the situation, in order to try and take others personalities into account and find a way to not be completely alone in this world.
thats just my way of thinking it out…then again i often completely ignore that thought process if im dealing with people i dont want to care about.
now back to what all started this; i remember the first day i used emoticons back on ICQ. (probably over 10 years ago) it was a new way of doing things but it seemed to portray thoughts and feelings with minimal effort and no real interaction…perfect for someone for which that doesn’t come naturally. so i guess my answer: yes…there really was no cons for me
alright, so maybe I’m finding ‘meaning’ in something commonplace; I guess I just see an S-leaning in the use of emoticons (You’re some-parts S, I imagine?). They just seem more Sensory in their straightforwardness. It’s true I do examine new NTs with my old NTs, and recall analyzing the use of emoticons - though effective for conveying feeling, as ultimately trite. Now that’s just one opinion, and it matters not, for I started this silly argument - but then you T’s like opposing opinions so I’m not too worried. It’s true that I do expect N’s to be interested in authentic communication, and if their words can’t express it, they’d rather be misunderstood than generic. But we are not all the same, and there are always elements to every personality. What say you in retort?
for the first time in this discussion i can agree with the majority of what you have stated…ofcourse that may be simply for the fact that you are no longer attacking my apparent slip of personality by the us of an emoticon.
mind you through all of this i must say; it was mentioned to me at one point that you are an idealist. yet it seems you have been putting an awful lot of “thinking” into your replies. (T?) in that sense perhaps your comment is correct. we do have portions of opposition in all of us. i think that timing effects this much more than anything else. on the flip side, however, you are basing your complete theory on textual grounds. one thing that the myers-briggs test does not account for is the different ways of learning that each of us tend towards. (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) how could a visual learner be expected to produce authentic communication by means of text? with that included in the theory, would you not agree that it could be seen as short-sighted to come to conclusions based on what someone else writes if they don’t tend towards auditory recollection? besides aren’t theories simply concepts that haven’t been proven wrong yet? it comes down to the simple fact: no matter how hard we try to anticipate one another, we will never be able to completely understand what is going through someone else’s head…and that’s probably a good thing since it seems difficult enough to understand what is going on in our own sometimes.
anyways i don’t know if that explains my side of the coin the way that you were hoping for…but then again maybe it did
(what personality is most likely to be sarcastic?)
see Dan, you’re so interesting. I’m glad that we are arguing this, aren’t you? Sorry if I came off a little judgmental. It’s true that as an F (Idealist), I like to make Feeling decisions but have learned to explain them in Thinking terms because I was once in super close association with my cousin who demanded a reason for my emotion-based decisions, and so I learned to explain them to her satisfaction, while secretly knowing the reality… or later seeing it. Interesting point you brought up about the learning styles, for can these being predicted according to the personality types? I haven’t thought of this before. And these could be the reasons for the hybrids. See, it’s always the hybrids - like maybe yourself that are less-predictable and so I have to puzzle over them more. (9_9) (searching emots, this one is someone gazing up).
haha sweet im like an electric car…and i can totally understand the whole playing with the reality around me to appease those i associate with. it seems i am completely surrounded by enfp’s (like 10 out of 35 people i have forced into taking the test) as a side note; according to my personality type it is almost impossible to offend me by being judgmental…in fact it gives me the opportunity for a friendly debate which i quite thrive on. so if anything i hope i didn’t punch any feelings too much.
with that out of the way i do agree that i have been mulling over the learning styles idea along with memory recall. my first thought is that they may be related to personality…but then again watching peoples eyes is a very good indication as to how they access information and have learned it. (it is also great for figuring out what is true) from what i have gathered over the past while it seems to almost be random…at least i cant seem to find a direct crossover. there may be a predisposition linking learning mode to personality development but then again the preface is that you are who you are inside isn’t it? anyways, something to ponder while you access your imagery.
