Honeycomb Rug (DIY Idea)

dwellflor
I stumbled across this idea in an older issue of Dwellmagazine (June 08). It was mentioned in a house tour that the designers hand-cut Flor carpet tiles into hexagons and affixed them to the walls to soften corners and edges (for the safety of the homeowner’s baby).
You can see the tour of the loft here.
Wouldn’t it be great as a rug, though? Our place here in Vancouver is tiny and I’ve been looking for a rug just the right size. I have thought about using Flor tiles before but I think cutting them into hexagons would make the rug look more custom.
Maybe in grays and yellow:

There are a ton of colors to choose from and most tiles (19.7″ x 19.7″ each) are between $7 – $15.
OR I could track down some free carpet samples before they’re tossed away. Hmmm.
I’ll post pictures if/when I try this out.

Also in the same house tour:

I love these glossy, misaligned kitchen cabinets. (Although that implies it was a mistake. Unaligned, maybe?) They look gorgeous, especially in such a sparse kitchen.
They’re actually Ikea cabinets. They bought different sizes and staggered them.
I can imagine if we tried this we would end up with big gaps and holes. We had to buy one upper cabinet for our last place and we got the wrong size and had to return it. Twice.

Do post pictures if you do the rug! I’m going to have to devise quite a few rugs soon…and I like the hexagons!
